Athens-Penteli (Greece)

– Assisting people with visually or mobility-related disabilities

The Municipality of Penteli is situated in the northeastern part of Athens’ Northern Sector, within the Region of Attica. Established under the Kallikratis Program, it was formed by merging the former municipalities/communities of Melissia, Penteli, and Nea Penteli. According to the 2021 census by Hellenic Statistical Authority, it has a population of 35,610 permanent residents. Covering an area of 36.1 square kilometres, its administrative centre is in Melissia.

In terms of public transportation, the Municipality of Penteli benefits from: 10 public bus lines and 6 municipal transport lines. While the municipality itself doesn’t have any Rail (Metro and Suburban) stations within its borders, residents can easily access stations in neighboring municipalities. Some of these nearby stations include “Doukissis Plakentias” (served by Metro Line 3 and Suburban), “Chalandri” (served by Metro Line 3), and “Maroussi” (Metro Line 1).

The Municipality of Penteli predominantly features single-family housing. This stems from its peri-urban nature. Another significant aspect of the municipality is its public and green spaces, both urban and peri-urban in character.

Zooming in on specific areas:

Melissia: This area showcases general residence use, primarily aligned linearly along major routes. An urban centre is noticeable in the southwest of the municipality. Additionally, there are several local centres with a dispersed layout.

Nea Penteli & Palaia Penteli: In these regions, non-residential land uses, such as urban centres, local neighbourhood hubs, educational institutions, care facilities, and special use areas, are minimal or practically non-existent.

Transport planning efforts of the Municipality of Penteli aim to improve mobility and access for its residents, making commuting to work, school, and social gatherings more efficient. The goal is to cultivate a vibrant, livable, and sustainable urban environment. Two public transport lines currently serve the municipality, connecting the neighbourhoods and central points of the city free of charge.

The Municipality is actively working on several key projects to enhance road safety, especially around schools and dangerous intersections and roads in the city. A strategic plan is underway to develop an extensive pedestrian and bike network, which is gradually being implemented. The Municipality has also launched its first Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and is rolling out an Electric Vehicle Charging Plan, set to install a significant number of public charging stations.

In addition, the Municipality recently launched the Urban Accessibility Plan. This initiative focuses on improving infrastructure to ensure public buildings and services; open spaces like parks; schools; and transport are accessible to all, particularly those with disabilities.
