– Inclusive Mobility
Budapest, the capital of Hungary, features a diverse transport and mobility infrastructure that plays a crucial role in the city’s daily operations. The city’s efficient transport system encompasses a network of trams, buses, and metro lines, facilitating convenient movement for the nearly 2.5 million residents in the functional urban area and over 3 million tourists per year.

Budapest’s transportation system significantly contributes to the accessibility and vibrancy of the city.

15% of Budapest’s population has some kind of disability, making accessible transport and infrastructure crucial for enabling an active lifestyle for these individuals and the aging population, as well as their families.

Budapest invests and makes great efforts to create a liveable city with equal access for everyone. In recognition of these efforts, Budapest received a ‘special mention’ from the European Access City Award jury in 2015 for its achievements in transport accessibility, notably the fully accessible Metro line no. 4 and the FUTAR passenger information system, which supports barrier-free route planning.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Public transport is still inaccessible to some individuals with physical disabilities, especially wheelchair users, due to issues with transfers and commuting. Additionally, widespread accessibility issues persist in public spaces, pavements, road crossings, and parking. The integration of information and communication technologies in public services and cultural events is also limited.

To address these issues and further improve accessibility, InclusiveSpaces
is undertaking several key initiatives in Budapest:
