Hamburg (Germany)
– Inclusive mobility hubs on natural leisure areas
The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, with a population of 1.8 million, stands as Germany’s second-largest city. Nestled on the Elbe River, about 110 kilometres southwest of the Baltic Sea, Hamburg is home to Germany’s largest port and Europe’s third largest, after Rotterdam and Antwerp.
Focusing on the Borough of Hamburg Eimsbüttel, particularly the Eppendorfer Weg area, Hamburg is undertaking a series of innovative pilot actions designed for broader application across the district and beyond. The city is an active member of EUROCITIES and participates in various H2020 and Horizon Europe projects, such as CLEVER Cities and AMIGOS, and contributes to the mySMARTLife lighthouse project. Notably, Hamburg earned the title of “European Green Capital” in 2011.
Hamburg’s master plan, “Green, Inclusive, Growing City by the Water – Perspectives on Urban Development in Hamburg,” is driven by co-creation processes at the local level. This plan aims to transform Hamburg into a truly inclusive city, enhancing public spaces’ accessibility and experiential value as vital elements of democratic urban culture. Key initiatives focus on protecting and creating open spaces, such as parks and playgrounds near residential areas, which are crucial for less mobile populations, including parents with babies, children, and the elderly.
As part of its climate mitigation efforts, Hamburg’s Climate Action Plan targets the energy and building sectors, leveraging new technologies to drive change.
