The InclusiveSpaces project made a strong impact at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2026 in Budapest, showcasing both cutting-edge research and practical mobility solutions that demonstrate what truly inclusive urban environments can look like.
A key focus of the conference was sharing new research that explores a critical question: How inclusive are our cities in practice-not just on paper?
As part of the InclusiveSpaces project, researchers conducted a user survey and qualitative analysis across Larnaka, Cyprus, and Penteli, Greece, engaging 63 participants, including vulnerable users, practitioners, and local authority representatives. The findings revealed important gaps between policy ambitions and the everyday realities experienced by citizens navigating urban spaces.
The research highlighted the need for stronger co-design approaches, deeper stakeholder engagement, and more effective implementation strategies to ensure that accessibility and inclusion are embedded into the fabric of our cities. These insights contributed to important discussions at TRA 2026 on how to create more equitable, people-centred urban environments that work for everyone.
While the research generated significant interest among conference attendees, one highlight stood out above all others: the opportunity to experience inclusive mobility firsthand through one of the project’s innovations: the Triple Tread® trike.
Located at the ERTICO stand, the trike attracted a steady stream of visitors eager to test a mobility solution designed around stability, comfort, ease of use, and enjoyment. Attendees had the chance to experience how inclusive mobility technologies can make sustainable transport more accessible and appealing to a wider range of users.
The enthusiasm around the trike was evident throughout the event. Visitors not only tested the vehicle but also shared valuable feedback and insights on how such solutions can help overcome barriers to mobility and participation in urban life.
A particularly memorable moment was the visit of the Irish Minister of Transport, who took the opportunity to try the Triple Tread® trike and learn more about the InclusiveSpaces vision for creating accessible, inclusive, and user-centred mobility systems.
The strong engagement at TRA 2026 reinforced a central message of the InclusiveSpaces project: achieving inclusive cities requires more than policies and plans, it requires practical solutions that empower people, respond to diverse needs, and make sustainable mobility accessible to all.
By combining evidence-based research with real-world demonstrations such as the Triple Tread® trike, InclusiveSpaces continues to contribute to the development of urban environments where accessibility, inclusion, and quality of life are at the heart of transport and city planning.
