– Inclusive design and seaside accessibility
In the southern coast of Cyprus, Larnaka is a city renowned for its thriving tourism industry. With a population of 52,038, Larnaka accounts for 33% of the province’s total population and 57.6% of its urban residents. According to the 2011 census, 7% of Larnaka’s population is over 65 years old, while 5% are under the age of 4.

No statistics are available concerning the number of disabled people who live in the city of Larnaka. However, the significant challenges in accessibility for disabled individuals is still evident. Many public spaces, such as parks and beaches, lack proper accessibility, and numerous buildings do not adhere to standards that facilitate the movement of disabled people. This social imbalance highlights the urgent need for improvements in accessibility.

To address these issues, InclusiveSpaces is embarking on several key initiatives
aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in Larnaka:

Data Collection and Evaluation: MLAB will collect travel demand data from impaired individuals and assess the accessibility levels within the municipality.

Co-Design and Universal Design Implementation: CMO will engage in co-design activities with the community and implement universal design principles to ensure inclusivity in new projects.

Digital Accessibility Assessment: iiAPA will deploy a digitalised accessibility design evaluation tool to assess buildings and public spaces, ensuring they meet high standards of accessibility.

iSEATRAC Installation: The municipality will identify coastal points for the installation and demonstration of iSEATRAC, providing improved beach access for disabled individuals.

Mobility Station/Kiosk Implementation: TOBEA will set up and demonstrate a Mobility Station/Kiosk to enhance urban mobility for those with disabilities.

Indoor Assistive Technologies: UoP will implement indoor assistive technologies in public buildings identified by the municipality, improving accessibility within these spaces.
