– Empowering people with borderline intelligence in auditing universal accessibility in buildings and public spaces
Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain, is the most populous city of Spain, with nearly 3.4 million people, with a metropolitan area housing approximately 6.7 million people. Spanning 604.3 square kilometres, Madrid is situated in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula and experiences hot summers and cool winters.
According to the statistical information of the municipality of Madrid, there has been a notable increase in the number of people with intellectual and mental disabilities, rising from 30,219 in 2016 to 35,152 in 2021. Notably, 70.02% of individuals with these disabilities are aged between 6 and 44 years. However, accessibility remains a significant challenge.
According to the Observatory of Universal Accessibility of COCEMFE in Madrid, only 18% of public buildings have adequate and accessible uses and services for all people, and only 9% are equipped for universal evacuation.

Implementing Universal Design Principles: New designs in Madrid will adhere to universal design principles, making them accessible to all individuals regardless of ability
Digital Accessibility Evaluation Tool: The digitalised accessibility design evaluation tool developed by iiAPA will be used to assess buildings and public spaces, ensuring they meet high standards of accessibility
